CROATIA READY FOR EURO CUP

After a couple of months apart and playing for their respective clubs, the Croatian players are all set to meet towards the end of this month and start their preparations for their upcoming Euro Cup qualifying matches.

As things stand for Croatia in their Euro Cup qualifying group right now, they are down at no. 4. The beginning of their campaign was pretty good as they had managed to topple Azerbaijan by a margin of 2 goals to 1, but then they couldn’t continue that momentum in the next game against Hungary and were beaten by the same margin to slip down a couple of places in the standings. MODRIC STILL ADAPTING

The Croatian midfielder Luka Modric has said that he is still adapting to Spanish football after he quashed the rumours suggesting that he was looking for a return to the Premier league. The 26-year-old moved to the Spanish club Real Madrid in the summer for around £ 35 million. He had been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea before completing a move to the Spanish club, but it has so far not been a great first half to the season for the 26-year-old. Modric has struggled to exert any influence on the team and has made only eight appearances so far this campaign.

He has also scored just one goal, which led to the Real Madrid fans voting him as one of the worst summer signings in Spanish football. He has once again been linked with a return to the Premier league where he was hugely successful with Tottenham. Chelsea are thought to be interested in securing his services. The European champions are on the lookout for a player who will be able to replace Frank Lampard in the centre of midfield. The 34-year-old is widely expected to leave the club at the end of the season. Modric could not be cheap due to the fact that he still has more than four years left on his contract.

“There are a few of us competing for that position and he is adapting to a new club and a new league. I found it difficult in my first season after coming from the Premier League but he is very well integrated, he is a fantastic lad and a great player. I have no doubt he will be important (to us),” said the Real Madrid midfielder Alonso. Madrid have struggled a lot in the league this season and are 16 points behind Barcelona.

STIMAC BACKS MODRIC

The Croatian national team manager Igor Stimac has criticised the stance taken by the Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy over the situation surrounding the star midfielder Luka Modric. It is quite clear that the Croatian midfielder Luka Modric wants to leave the club in order to sign for Spanish club Real Madrid. The Spanish club are willing to pay around £ 30 million in transfer fees for the player, but Tottenham have been extremely stubborn in their decision not to sell the player for anything below £ 40 million. As a result, there has been a lot of confusion regarding the future of the player.

The manager of the Croatian national team, Igor Stimac, has said that Daniel Levy is the only person responsible for this situation surrounding Luka Modric. The 26-year-old midfielder has become subject of intense transfer rumours for the last two seasons now. Tottenham managed to keep hold of the player last season on the promise that they would allow him to leave to a much bigger club this time around. However, they have fallen back on their promise and have not allowed the player to complete his dream move to Real Madrid according to the Croatian manager Igor Stimac.

“I don’t like the situation that he is in at all, he has not played any matches at all this summer. He will end up signing for Madrid before the market shuts,” said the former West Ham defender in a recent press conference. Luka Modric has not been training with the Tottenham first-team. The Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas also confirmed recently that he wants an end to the Modric saga because it would allow him to move on and secure a replacement for the playmaker. Tottenham have been linked with the Portuguese international Moutinho.
