PERISIC FEATURED DURING DEFEAT AGAINST SPORTING

Croatia international Ivan Perisic was in the Tottenham Hotspur starting XI till the end of the Champions League group stage clash with Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon, but he was unable to influence the outcome of the game. The Croatia international is one of the new players at Spurs following his move to the club during the transfer window this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur snapped Perisic up as a free agent on the back of the end of his contract at Italian Serie A giants Inter Milan. The Croatia national team star was offered a new deal at Inter Milan, but he turned it down in favour of a move to the Premier League.

Perisichas been a regular for Spurs in his first season at the club. He has been played on the left side of a five-man defence by manager Antonio Conte. He was helpless as the defence conceded two late goals to suffer their first defeat of the season in all competitions.

Spurs came into the Sporting Lisbon game with a seven-game unbeaten run in all this season. However, the run came to an end after Paulinho and Arthur scored to propel the Portuguese side to a 2-0 win in their Group D clash.

Sporting Lisbon were the better side in the first 45 minutes, but didn’t have any end result to show for their superiority. The situation changed on the stroke of fulltime when Portuguese star Paulinho scored the opener via a header from a Pedro Goncalves corner kick. Brazilian attacker Arthur Gomes came off the bench afterwards to seal the result with his solo goal three minutes into added time. He came on for the lively Marcus Edwards and within a few minutes on the pitch, he bamboozled the Spurs defensive duo of Emerson Royal and Cristian Romero to slot home the clinching goal.
